These incredibly easy-to-make smoked salmon twisted straws will be the perfect starters for your Christmas party – or any party, actually! In this recipe, I will explain how I prepared these twists with smoked salmon. Alternatively, you can fill them with ham and cheese, or pesto and cheese to please your vegetarian guests. With one roll of puff pastry, I obtained 9 twists.

  1. Preheat oven at 180C (fan).
  2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet.
  3. Place the slices of smoked salmon on half of the puff pastry sheet. Fold the pastry in half.
  4. Using a sharp knife, cut the pastry into long strips about 1.5 cm wide.
  5. Take a baking tray and cover it with a baking sheet. As you transfer each strip on the baking sheet, twist the ends in opposite directions to give the straws a spiraled look. Gently press the ends into the sheet to make them stick.
  6. Brush each twist with a beaten egg. Sprinkle some poppy seeds (or sesame seeds, or both).
  7. Place the baking tray in the middle of the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the twists are nicely golden. Once baked, let them cool down for a few minutes before serving.
